Endeavor Electric is proud to be part of the Tall Stacks event by enhancing the decorative lighting on the John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge over the Ohio River. Endeavor Electric has been awarded the contract to provide ongoing electrical service and maintenance for this historical landmark.

The John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge was the longest suspension bridge in the world at 1,057 feet when it opened on December 1, 1866. This landmark bridge which crosses the Ohio River between Cincinnati, Ohio and Covington, Kentucky maintained this distinction until the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge in 1883.

Construction of the bridge took over ten years due to the Civil War & financial difficulties. It was the first bridge to use both vertical suspenders and diagonal stays spanning from 230 foot stone towers and was the prototype for the Brooklyn Bridge. One unique architectural trademark of the bridge and Cincinnati are its Flying Pig statues designed to mock those who did not believe Cincinnati would become a major city.

The bridge was privately owned until 1953 when it was purchased from the Cincinnati-Covington Bridge Company by the Commonwealth of Kentucky for $4.2 million. Tolls were collected on the bridge until the opening of the Brent Spence Bridge on Interstate 75 in 1963. The original cost for a pedestrian was one cent and fifteen cents for a horse & buggy.

The bridge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated as a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark. Initially called the “Covington-Cincinnati Suspension Bridge” it was renamed to honor John A. Roebling (the designer and builder) in 1983. The bridge remains a popular, convenient route between Cincinnati and Covington.
